finding a good EXPRO replacement on linux
Over the various months and redesigns of this website, the tools I use to maintain it have changed over time At first, I used nano on linux and I did everything BY HAND (God kill me), but then, I stumbled upon "microsoft frontpage", a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) html editor, the problem is that, this program is old as fuck, and it's starting to have, old-as-fuck-program problems, so I had to find a replacement, and that's where I found Expression web (or EXPRO), which is essentially the 2010s reboot of frontpage Matter of fact, expro is pretty good and I still use it to this day, it doesn't crash and looks a lot better too (along with having more QOL stuff) The problem? Frontpage is only on windows, and at the time, I was maining my macbook, so I had to find yet ANOTHER alternative, which was "kompozer"
Don't get me wrong, kompozer is good, but
it's not as good as Expro, but still, it was sufficient for my macbook that is, until I switched to Arch linux
and realized that this shitty ahh abandonware only has a .deb version for linux,
and on an older version too (the latest beta just doesn't start neither on x11
nor wayland) and so, the search begins again, I tried
to make expro work on arch with wine, no success
then I tried kompozer
with wine, but it was in a weird fucking language, so, my last option was
frontpage 2003, and it finally worked
SO, for now, my current setup is:
windows pc: expro
main pc and laptop: fp2003
mac: kompozer
edit october 2nd 2025:
I ended up fixing the language issue on kompozer (turns out I just had
to download the english executable) and now I just use kompozer on any
machine that isn't windows (mostly because FP sucks balls, expro is
still my favorite)
if I'll ever find a better cross platform WYSIWYG thingy i'll just use that ig
(this page is written using Expro)
